basketball. Basketball is played by more than 46 million Americans. It is one of the most popular games around the world, played by both men and women of all ages. Combining physicality, intelligence, grace, and coordination, basketball is flexible enough to let each player develop their own style. The object of the game, get the ball into the hoop to score more points than your opponent before time runs out!
Basketball was invented in 1891, by Dr. James Naismith during a physical education class. He wanted to create an indoor activity that didn't involve much physical contact and could be played during the winter by the school's students. Using a soccer ball and two peach baskets fastened to the railing of the gallery surrounding a gym, Naismith devised thirteen rules for a new game he termed "Basket Ball." By 1984, Naismith had refined the set of rules for the new game because basketball had become accepted as a legitimate sport. The peach baskets as hoops had been replaced by iron rims with hammock-styled netting and specific balls for the sport were being developed in the process of introducing basketball internationally. The first basketball game was played in 1891 by a team of men at a YMCA. Women's basketball began a year later in 1892. By 1996, there were 16 million women playing basketball all over the world. From here developed collegiate men and women's basketball and thus further professional basketball. Today there are over 27,790,000 basketball participants. In 2012, basketball ranked #1 in most participated programs for both girls and boys in high school. Below is a graph of the age participation rate of basketball in year 2001 and 2011. |
